AI Tools Are Replacing Your $20/Month SaaS Subscriptions

February 17, 2026

That niche tool you are paying monthly for? There is a good chance an AI assistant can do the same thing for free.

Here is something that is becoming obvious to anyone building with AI: those niche SaaS tools charging $10-30/month are getting replaced by prompts and workflows.

Not the big platforms. Not your CRM or project management tool. But the single-purpose utilities you signed up for, used twice, and forgot to cancel? Those are on borrowed time.

The Pattern

Think about what most micro-SaaS tools actually do. They take an input, process it through some logic, and give you an output. Convert this format to that format. Extract data from here and put it there. Summarize this, transform that.

That is exactly what LLMs excel at.

A few examples we have seen in the wild:

  • Math/LaTeX conversion: Tools like Mathpix charge $5-10/month to convert handwritten equations to LaTeX. Claude or GPT can do this from a photo with a single prompt.
  • Meeting transcription: Otter.ai and similar services charge per minute. Whisper is free and runs locally.
  • Content repurposing: Services that turn blog posts into social threads or newsletters? That is a prompt template.
  • Data extraction: Scraping tools and PDF parsers are being replaced by multimodal models that just read the document.

Where This Gets Interesting

The real shift is not just cost savings. It is customization.

SaaS tools give you their workflow. AI gives you yours. You can build exactly what you need without adapting to someone else product decisions.

We have been building internal tools this way for months. A workflow that would have required stitching together three different services now lives in a single automation. The AI handles the transformation logic. Make.com or n8n handles the plumbing.

What Still Needs Paid Tools

To be clear: AI is not replacing everything.

  • Databases and storage: You still need somewhere to put your data.
  • Authentication and users: If you need login systems and permissions, that is infrastructure.
  • Real-time collaboration: AI does not replace the need for multiple people to work on something simultaneously.
  • Compliance and audit trails: Some industries need certified tools with specific guarantees.

The pattern is this: if a tool core value is processing or transforming information, AI can probably do it. If the value is infrastructure, collaboration, or compliance, you still need the tool.

How to Audit Your SaaS Stack

Here is a practical exercise. Look at your credit card statement and find every subscription under $50/month. For each one, ask:

  1. What does this tool actually do? (Be specific.)
  2. Could I describe that task to an AI assistant?
  3. Is there a free or open-source alternative that AI could enhance?

You will probably find 2-3 tools you can cancel this week.

The Bigger Picture

This is not about being cheap. It is about the fundamental economics of software changing.

When processing logic becomes a commodity (which LLMs are making it), the value shifts to data, distribution, and user experience. The tools that survive will be the ones that offer something AI cannot replicate.

For now, though? Stop paying for fancy wrappers around capabilities you already have access to.
